Bible Travel Posters!

If you’ve ever seen a vintage travel poster, you know how they use bold text, bright colors, and enticing graphics to “sell” their destination. The design process must have been a lot of fun. Well, you and your family can get in on the fun by creating your own travel poster…for a biblical destination!

First things first, check out Wikipedia’s listing of biblical places. Many of the listings include scripture passages referencing the location, so you can head to your Bible next and see what information you can gather about the place that catches your eye. For example, in Genesis 47:6, the land of Goshen is described as “the best part of the land,” which is enticing, but not very descriptive. In that case, your next stop might be a resource like this, which delves into the present-day locations of Biblical places. Use the information you find in your Bible and through whatever internet rabbit hole you go down to inspire the art on your poster. Goshen, as it turns out, was within the Nile Delta, one of the most fertile parts of Egypt. Water, crops, and livestock would all be great features to include on your poster!

Draw your poster art first (use bold colors and simple graphics – do an internet search of “vintage travel posters” if you need some image references). Then write the name of the place in your best fancy lettering. Finally, come up with a slogan that makes your location sound like the ultimate travel destination. This might reference the Bible story that takes place there or can even be straight from scripture a la “GOSHEN: The Best Part of the Land!” Remember that a travel poster always puts a positive spin on the place it’s advertising, so even if you choose a place like Gomorrah, you have to think about how the tourism office would want it to be portrayed (“GOMORRAH: Relax in Our Sulfur Baths!”).

When you’ve finished your poster (or posters!), share them with each other and with us, either in person or on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. Have fun learning new things about old places, tapping into your creativity, and planning a getaway that takes you through space AND time!
