In Search of the Best Mother’s Day Gift Ever

Mother’s Day is next Sunday! If your eyes got wide when you read that statement, this post is for you. There’s still time to prepare a thoughtful gift for the mom (or other woman who means the world to you!) in your life, and this week we’d like to offer you an idea that is mom tested, mom approved.

When asked about the best gift she ever received from her family, Family Time blogger Jen’s mom immediately mentioned the year she received a custom calendar from Shutterfly. It had a family photo or photo collage for each month, and holidays, family birthdays, and anniversaries were already printed onto the appropriate dates. She loved how thoughtful and personal it was, while also being useful. Perhaps the mom(s) in your life would like a calendar like that...and if designing it online (and, at this point, paying for expedited shipping) is not in the cards for you, you can make your own!

You’ll need card stock or construction paper, something to poke holes with, and something to bind the pages together – like yarn, ribbon, or book rings.

First, select the art for each month. These can be photos that you print at home or in a store or, alternatively for those with young kids or a lot of artistic talent, you can use drawings instead.

Next, create the calendar pages. There are some adorable 2021 monthly templates at iMom.com that you can use if you’d prefer not to measure out the boxes by hand. If you’d like to extend yours into 2022, you’ll need a blank template like this one. Once you’ve got the dates filled in, you can add in holidays and other important dates.

All that’s left is to put the pages together! Line up your pages so that when it’s opened to a given month, both your picture and the calendar page are visible and pointing the same direction. Then close it and punch holes. Use the yarn or book rings to bind the calendar, and your gift is ready to go!

If you create a calendar this week, we’d love to see how it comes out! And if you have other ideas for how to make Mother’s Day extra special, share them on our Facebook page as well. Let’s make the day one to remember!
