Breathe Mindfully
Together: try Pretzel Breathing, Drain Breathing, or Balloon Breathing (maybe all three!). Each technique involves full-body engagement and imagery that is easy for kids to relate to. Simple descriptions of each, as well as a great video of a kiddo demonstrating them, can be found here:
Family Time, August 23: Breathe mindfully. In order to continue our focus on finding peace in what is for many of us a stressful time, here are some breathing exercises that can help you and your family calm your nervous system, quiet your mind, and become more present before engaging in meditation or prayer. Together: try Pretzel Breathing, Drain Breathing, or Balloon Breathing (maybe all three!). Each technique involves full-body engagement and imagery that is easy for kids to relate to. Simple descriptions of each, as well as a great video of a kiddo demonstrating them, can be found here: https://leftbrainbuddha.com/mindful-breathing-exercises-for-kids-as-taught-by-my-son-video/
You may watch and enjoy, as long as you don't giggle (he is adamant on that point; no exceptions). =)
Alone: try Starfish Breathing. This technique is accessible to all ages, but is particularly useful for adults who need to decompress without making too much of a fuss. Simply spread the fingers of one hand, and with the forefinger of the other hand, trace up and down each finger. Inhale as you trace your way up, and exhale as you trace your way down. Be slow and purposeful, and feel free to do both hands and repeat as necessary. Enjoy the moment right after you finish tracing your hand - the sense of being calm and grounded is a wonderful gift you can give yourself. As always, let us know how these techniques work for you!
