Bring More Compassion into the World With a Kindness Meditation.
This particular meditation is (slightly adapted) from https://www.mindful.org/mindfulness-for-kids/ but it can be done by your whole family together, or by you alone - it's simple, easy to remember, and can be done anywhere.
You will guide the meditation, out loud if you're leading any young people, silently if you're alone. Here's how it goes:
• Find a comfortable seated position and close your eyes. This might be challenging for some folks, regardless of age!
• Think of someone you respect and look up to, and who loves you in return. No need to say who - just hold them in your mind and heart.
◦ Notice how you feel as you think of them.
◦ The “script” says to make a wish and send it their way, but we've been connecting
mindfulness to prayer, so instead say a silent prayer for them, something that would
make them happy or improve their life.
• Think of another person you love, and repeat the process for that person.
• Think of a neutral person – someone you see around but don’t really know. Repeat the process for that person.
• Think of someone who has frustrated you lately. This person might even be meditating with you right now. Hold them in your mind and heart, notice how you feel, and send them a prayer - just as full of love and compassion as the others.
• Notice how you feel at the end of your practice. Maybe there’s been a shift. And maybe you can take that feeling with you as you open your eyes and go back to your day...
We hope this meditation brings both calm and compassion into your life. Let us know what your experience is, and how this practice works for you!
