Trust Walk

Consider a Trust Walk to practice and build trust within your family! Supplies needed include a blindfold, some soft obstacles (like cardboard boxes, soft cones/pylons, or balloons) and a grassy field or safe area to walk around. Create a simple course with your soft obstacles and remember, Safety First: make sure that there’s nothing dangerous nearby. Once the obstacle course is created, the blindfolded person will be guided through the course by the sighted person, first using touch, but then a second time using no touch and only verbal cues, like, “stop walking… turn left… now take three step…”. After the blindfolded person has made it through the obstacles, change places and give everyone a chance to participate and do BOTH roles. Most important, have a family conversation afterwards. Here are some discussion questions for you to consider:

  • What do you think was the purpose of this team building activity?

  • When you are guiding and helping someone else, what was it like to be fully responsible for the safety of your partner?

  • Was it difficult to trust your partner while blindfolded? Why or why not?

  • How did it feel when you both succeeded at accomplishing your goal?

  • How does this relate to… (here you can fill in the blank with something that’s familiar to your family member like class, a sports team, working with others on a project)?

  • If someone was joking around, how do jokes build trust and how do jokes weaken trust?

  • How do you know or judge when someone is reliable and trustworthy?

  • If someone breaks our trust, is that trust forever broken or how can they regain our trust? What if we are the ones who were untrustworthy; how do we make ourselves trustworthy again?

We hope that this can be a meaningful activity for you and your family and that you might learn a little more about each other.
