Bible Trivia Crosswords!

Creating a crossword puzzle might seem like a complicated process. But technology has simplified it so much that it’s become an activity that you and your family can do together. This week, create your own puzzle using Bible trivia!

First, choose a theme – “Bible Trivia” might be specific enough for you, but you can also zero in on Bible characters, locations, the Old or New Testament, or even parables.

Next, come up with your clues. If you all work together on this part, there will be nobody to solve the puzzle you come up with, so consider splitting into teams that each create a puzzle for another team to solve, or create your puzzles independently (with support offered to those who might need a hand writing their clues). Try to come up with at least ten clues, though you may end up with way more than that. You might find it easier to brainstorm your list of answers first, then back into the question or prompt that would lead you to that word (for example, you might decide one of your words is “rainbow,” then decide the clue that leads to that word will be “sign of God’s promise to Noah.”).

Once you’ve got your clues, enter them into the Discovery Education puzzle generator. This marvelous program takes your input and creates a grid for you, with the clues numbered and sorted into across and down. All you have to do is print it out! Pro tip: print it at a larger size than the default to make it easier to read and fill in.

If you prefer to make a handcrafted puzzle, you can follow the instructions on wikiHow to draw your own. You can also take your crossword clues and play a trivia game with them instead, kind of like the way folks ask for help when they’re solving a puzzle on their own and encounter a tricky clue: “Seven letters – ‘Where was the good Samaritan going?’” “J-E-R-I-C-H-O!”

We created one for you to test drive with your family – give it a go and see if it gives you ideas for your own puzzle. And we invite you to share the ones you create with us; we’ll get them out to the rest of the Desert Mission community, and we can all solve each other’s puzzles! Bring them to church in person or share the file with us on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
