Create a Yarn Labyrinth
A labyrinth is an invitation to slow down and connect. Walking the labyrinth can be a peaceful moving meditation, a prayerful journey inward. We are lucky to have one at Desert Mission, and while it’s always available to those who need it, it isn’t always possible to come and walk it. That’s where a finger labyrinth comes in.
A finger labyrinth is meant to be traced with your finger. It is small and portable and you can use it wherever and whenever you need it. And while the labyrinth itself is a source of inward connection, if you create yours alongside family, friends, or your church community, the process can be a source of outward connection as well!
There are tons of options out there for finger labyrinths, but the one we’d like to offer, the yarn labyrinth, has a bonus sensory feature. The inspiration for this particular design was found on GrowChristians.org, which also contains additional information and pictures. But the process of creating one is really quite simple.
First, choose your level of complexity. You can make a 3-circuit labyrinth, which is quite simple, or a 7-circuit labyrinth, which has additional layers. Next, decide whether you’ll draw your own or print a template. Drawing your own offers an additional opportunity for focused mindfulness, but if the process of trying to get it right will be more frustrating than fulfilling for you, perhaps you’d be better served by printing one out. Here are templates for the 3-circuit and the 7-circuit labyrinths; here are how-to instructions for drawing the 3-circuit and the 7-circuit labyrinths.
Once you have your labyrinth pattern, glue it to something sturdy like card stock or cardboard. Use craft glue to attach yarn to the lines of the labyrinth and dab some on the ends so it won’t unravel. And that’s it! You’re ready to breathe, focus, and journey to the center.
We’d love to see your yarn labyrinth! Share with us in person or on Facebook or Instagram.
