Celebrate Halloween in a New Way

As with most things this year, Halloween will be different than it has been in the past. But, in keeping with the theme of 2020, this is another opportunity to adapt, be resilient, and make the best of it, so...

Create some new Halloween traditions! As with the family dinner rituals we discussed last week, they can easily become “the way things have always been done” in your family.

You can directly incorporate Halloween into your family dinner plan with these extremely creative recipes by clicking here.

There’s a link to a list of “grown-up” recipes there as well, but there’s a lot of overlap, so lean into the silly fun!

Beyond the food and costumes, Halloween is, for many, a special time of community. If your neighborhood, building, or complex is missing that connection this year, get things started by BOOing someone (yes, you read that correctly - BOO them)! It's pretty simple to do:

  • Make a couple treat bags or baskets (a great family activity!), then leave them at the front doors of a few neighbors along with a poem explaining what's happening and a sign that says they’ve been “BOOed!”

  • They will hang up the sign to show they’ve had a turn, then pass on the BOOing to others. It’s a little close to Halloween for the chain to make it through your whole neighborhood or building complex, but who knows how far you’ll get?

Click here for detailed instructions and some adorable templates.

As you see the signs pop up on your neighbors’ homes, your family will be reminded that even though things aren’t the same this year, we are still all in this together, and community can still be created no matter what. You might even prompt a sense of connection that wasn’t there before, one that will hopefully continue and deepen as time goes by.

Happy Haunting! 🎃
