Take a Memorial Day Road Trip

Memorial Day is not just a day to recognize the sacrifices of the servicemembers who have given their lives to protect our freedoms, it’s also the unofficial start to summer. This week, enjoy your freedoms while spending some quality time with those you love the most: take a road trip!

Gas prices are pretty high right now, so while a trip out of town is always a nice change of pace, you might choose to stay a little closer to home. If you do, perhaps you’d like to head to one of the war memorials in the greater Phoenix area – you can find a list of sites here.

Regardless of how far you choose to go, take full advantage of the time you spend in the car. Create a road trip playlist that everyone can contribute to, and play it as you go. Bring some favorite snacks to share. Then put down your devices and play some road trip games! Here are some of our favorites:

  • The License Plate Game – try to spot as many different states as you can! You can play this as a competition or as family. Have someone keep track of how many you’ve found

  • The Alphabet Game – look out the window for things that begin with each letter of the alphabet. You must go in order from A to Z. Again, compete OR work together to make it to Z

  • DIY Bingo – before you leave, create a Bingo card that includes things you think you might see on the way to your destination. Tailor it to the route you plan to take. Be sure that everyone’s card has a unique configuration of items, then play along the way! Here’s a template you can use for your cards.

  • Cows on My Side – this one works best as a competition. If you see cows on your side of the car, call out “Cows on my side!” and you get a point. If you see cows on the other side of the car, call out “Cows on your side!” If you spot their cows before the person sitting on that side of the car, you steal a point from them.

You may know other road trip games – feel free to play those as well! And, of course, share your favorites with us on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. We hope you reach your destination relaxed, engaged, and full of appreciation for the people you call family and for the time you are lucky enough to get to spend with each other.
