Celebrate More!

In a conversation about the vast collection of significant and less-significant holidays on the website “National Today,” specifically whether the number has become excessive, Pastor Jim made a simple yet powerful observation: more reasons to celebrate is a great thing! This is very on-brand for a man who just concluded a beautiful sermon series about things we can cultivate “more” of in our lives. It’s also an insight that we encourage your family to embrace, so this week, create your own reason to celebrate. Let’s add to the ranks of National Today with MORE HOLIDAYS!

First you’ll need to come up with a premise for your new holiday. Consider the following categories as possible idea starters; you might even take an example holiday and tweak it rather than starting from scratch:

  • Food and drink – there’s already an International Chicken Wing Day; what food could you fete?

  • Special interests – we celebrate World UFO Day and Comic Sans Day; what are some of your niche topics of fascination?

  • Appreciation – what is your version of American Business Women’s Day, or National Monica Day; whose existence would you like to celebrate?

  • Causes – in a world that already observes Change a Pet’s Life Day, what cause is close to your heart?

  • Relationships – we have Grandparents Day, Fathers Day, Mother’s Day; what relationships are important to you?

Your holiday can be as serious or silly as you want. Bonus points if you Google it and it doesn’t exist, because there are so many of these holidays, it might be hard to think of something that hasn’t already been thought of!

After you decide what your holiday is, decide when it is. Maybe it’s on a specific day, like July 15th, or maybe it’s on the third Thursday of August, or maybe it’s each day on which you hear a particular song on the radio.

Finally, decide how to observe your holiday. There might be special foods to eat, unique clothing to wear, or complicated rituals to complete…get creative and remember, we’re going for MORE! More holidays in the world, even if only a few people know about them, means more time spent together, more laughter, and more joy. And you can never have too much of that.
